Smart Lock Power Outage: Will Your Miami Door Still Unlock?
A power outage can interrupt remote access while a battery-powered lock still works locally. Check your model and backup entry plan.
· 4 min read · Smart Locks
A smart lock power outage does not always mean a locked door stops working. Many residential smart locks use internal batteries, so losing household electricity does not automatically remove power from the lock. The internet connection is a separate part of the system.
Before a storm reaches Miami, identify your model and check how you can enter without remote app access. That preparation is more useful than discovering your backup options while standing outside.
What changes during a smart lock power outage?
Schlage explains that its residential electronic and smart locks run on batteries. Features that depend on a network connection may become unavailable during an outage.
For your own door, separate three questions: does the lock have battery power, does your phone have power, and does the lock have the connection its remote features require? An app connection failure alone does not identify which component has failed.
Try the entry method your manual supports, such as the keypad or mechanical key. Avoid factory-resetting a lock simply because the app cannot connect. A reset may create additional setup work without restoring the home's internet service.
Prepare a backup that fits your exact model
Mechanical key backup
Some smart locks retain a conventional key cylinder. Test your authorized backup key before you need it, and keep it accessible through a secure arrangement outside the locked home.
For the Schlage Encode series, Schlage specifies the mechanical key as the backup when its internal batteries die. That series does not offer an external battery jumpstart feature.
External emergency power
Some keyless models provide designated external power contacts. Kwikset's Obsidian guidance describes using its emergency battery contacts with a valid user code. This feature is model-specific; do not assume another lock supports it.
Save the correct manual on your phone and review the manufacturer's procedure in advance. A neighbor holding a spare code cannot operate a lock whose batteries are exhausted unless the required power is restored.
Check batteries before you rely on backup entry
Respond to low-battery alerts promptly. Use the battery type specified for your model and follow its replacement procedure. Store replacements where they remain dry and accessible.
For the models covered by its guidance, Kwikset recommends alkaline batteries and checking alignment. A bolt rubbing against the strike can increase motor load. Battery drain can have several causes, so repeated depletion deserves troubleshooting rather than repeated guesses.
Keep a simple record of the lock model, battery replacement date and supported backup method. Share that information with authorized household members without posting access codes in a public or shared location.
Plan for local entry as well as remote control
Before leaving home, confirm that you can lock and unlock the door with the method you expect to use during an outage. A working phone app should not be your only entry plan.
Include your door hardware in your hurricane season security checklist. If you are selecting a new device, discuss backup access along with convenience features and app compatibility.

Frequently asked questions
Do smart locks work without Wi-Fi?
Many battery-powered residential models support local operation without Wi-Fi. The available keypad, key or phone features depend on the exact product and its configuration.
Will a smart lock unlock automatically when its batteries die?
Do not assume that it will. Kwikset states that several of its supported models remain in their last state when batteries are exhausted; check your model's manual.
Can I use a 9-volt battery on any smart lock?
No. Only use an external power method that the manufacturer specifies for your exact model. Schlage Encode and Kwikset Obsidian have different backup arrangements.
