Keyed Alike Locks in Miami: Can Your Doors Use One Key?
One house key can simplify daily entry, but compatibility and access boundaries should guide which cylinders belong together.
· 4 min read · Residential / Rekeying
Keyed alike locks allow the same key to operate several compatible cylinders. For a household with different keys for the front, side and back entrances, that can make everyday access easier. It does not mean every lock on the property should automatically join the same group.
Before buying hardware, identify the doors you want to include and the access you want to keep separate. A compatibility review can help you avoid replacing functioning locks unnecessarily.
What keyed alike locks actually change
Keying locks alike concerns the mechanical key that operates their cylinders. It does not synchronize electronic access codes, create remote access or automatically improve the strength of the door.
Two cylinders can share a key while their surrounding hardware differs. Conversely, similar-looking locks may require different key profiles or service methods. Appearance and finish are not enough to establish compatibility.
Count cylinders before asking for an estimate
A keyed knob and a keyed deadbolt on the same door are two cylinders. Include both when listing the hardware. Also note gates, storage areas and any smart lock with a mechanical backup cylinder.
Make a short inventory with the location, brand and model where visible. Tell the locksmith whether you have a working key for each cylinder. You can photograph the installed hardware without sharing close-up images of key cuts or key codes.
The inventory lets the provider explain which locks may be rekeyed and which need further inspection before a one-key arrangement can be quoted.
Compatibility determines the available options
Schlage's keying guidance explains that its cylindrical mechanical and smart locks can be keyed alike or rekeyed as appropriate. That does not establish universal compatibility across every brand, keyway or cylinder type.
Ask the locksmith to confirm the proposed configuration before ordering parts. Some projects can reuse existing cylinders. Others may require compatible replacement components, and a particular door assembly may limit the available substitutions.
For supported homeowner-rekey products, follow the exact model instructions. A feature that works on one lock is not a general method for every cylinder in the house.
Decide which doors should keep separate keys
Convenience is useful when the same household members need the same access. A different arrangement may suit a garden gate used by a service provider, a separately occupied room or a storage area you want to restrict.
Write down who should enter each area before choosing the grouping. A person holding the shared key can operate every cylinder assigned to it. If that key goes missing, the response should cover the whole group rather than only one door.
For household planning, think in terms of permissions first and key count second. Carrying fewer keys is helpful only if the resulting access arrangement still fits the property.
Keyed alike is different from master keying
A straightforward keyed-alike arrangement gives the same key access to the grouped locks. A master-key design can provide different access levels, subject to compatible hardware and a planned system.
If your project involves several occupants or restricted areas, review master key system planning rather than assuming one common house key meets the need.
Test the completed keying arrangement
Ask which existing keys will stop working and which are intentionally retained. Test every supplied key in each assigned cylinder before the service is complete. Keep the door under control during testing so you do not lock yourself out.
If the project follows a move, our guide to rekeying after moving in explains the broader access review. Keying alike should be one decision within that review, rather than a substitute for accounting for existing copies.

Frequently asked questions
Can locks from different brands share one key?
Sometimes a compatible configuration can be arranged, but do not assume it. The locksmith must assess the keyways, cylinders and suitable replacement options.
Can a smart lock be included in keyed alike locks?
A model with a compatible mechanical cylinder may be a candidate. A fully keyless model has no mechanical key cylinder to include in that arrangement.
Does one shared key create individual access levels?
No. Everyone with that shared key can operate its assigned locks. Separate keys, an appropriate master-key design or individual electronic credentials address different access needs.
