Schlage is widely regarded as the most security-focused consumer lock brand in North America. Their smart lock lineup combines Grade 1 ANSI/BHMA certification — the same rating used in commercial buildings — with modern keyless entry features that work well in Miami's demanding climate.

Why Schlage Stands Out

Where most smart lock brands prioritize features and price, Schlage leads with physical security. Their deadbolts consistently earn the highest ratings from ANSI/BHMA and have a reputation for resistance to physical attacks — picking, bumping, and drilling — that most competitors don't match.

For Miami homeowners who want smart technology *without* sacrificing the security of their deadbolt, Schlage is the strongest choice.

Top Schlage Smart Lock Models

Schlage Encode Plus The Encode Plus connects directly to Wi-Fi and includes Apple Home Key — letting you unlock the door with a tap of your iPhone or Apple Watch. It also supports Alexa and Google Home. This is Schlage's most advanced residential model and the best fit for Apple ecosystem households.

Schlage Encode Wi-Fi connected, with up to 100 access codes, a built-in alarm that detects forced entry attempts, and compatibility with Alexa, Google Home, and Ring. No hub required. The Encode is the most popular Schlage smart lock for Miami rental properties.

Schlage Connect (Z-Wave) Designed for smart home systems like SmartThings, Wink, and Ring Alarm. If you already have a Z-Wave hub, the Connect integrates cleanly. Less useful as a standalone product.

Schlage Sense Bluetooth + keypad with Apple HomeKit support. Best for Apple users who don't need remote access or Wi-Fi connectivity.

Schlage vs. Kwikset: The Real Difference

Both brands make solid smart locks, but they target slightly different buyers:

• Schlage is better if physical security is the priority. The internal construction, cylinder quality, and attack resistance are genuinely superior.
• Kwikset is better if budget and feature breadth matter more than absolute security. Kwikset's SmartKey rekeying also makes tenant changes faster and cheaper.

For Miami homes in areas with higher property crime (Downtown, certain parts of Wynwood, Liberty City), Schlage's Grade 1 construction adds real-world value.

Miami Climate Performance

Schlage's commercial-grade construction handles Miami's humidity and heat well. The brass cylinder and reinforced strike plate resist corrosion better than most residential locks. We recommend the same 6-month silicone lubricant maintenance as other brands.

One note: Schlage's touchpads can be slightly stiffer in cold weather (not a common Miami concern) but perform excellently in heat.

Installation

Schlage deadbolts use standard US door prep (2-1/8" bore). The Encode and Encode Plus include door sensor hardware that requires careful alignment — professional installation ensures the alarm sensor is calibrated correctly.

Caraballo Locksmith installs and programs all Schlage smart lock models. We stock the Encode, Encode Plus, and Connect for same-day installation.

Common Schlage Issues in Miami

• Alarm triggers on its own: Usually a door alignment issue where the deadbolt doesn't retract cleanly, causing false vibration detection. Strike plate adjustment resolves it.
• Touchpad lights not responding: Low battery warning. Schlage uses a distinctive low-battery signal — four beeping tones — before complete failure.
• Code programming error: The Encode uses a distinct programming sequence. If codes aren't accepting, a full factory reset usually resolves it.

Bottom Line

If you're comparing smart locks and security matters most, Schlage is the right choice. For Miami homeowners in high-security or high-value properties, the extra investment in a Schlage Encode or Encode Plus pays off in both protection and peace of mind.
